✅ Societies needed to pass on reading, law, and skills beyond the family

But why?

The earliest schools (Mesopotamia’s edubba, ~2500 BCE) trained scribes for temple and palace administration — writing and arithmetic as state infrastructure. Formal education expanded with religion (church schools, madrasas), states needing literate officials (Prussia’s compulsory schools, 1763), and industry requiring disciplined workers — layering purposes that became today’s universal schooling.

🧒 For younger kids: When writing was invented, knowledge grew too big for parents alone — readers and record-keepers had to be trained!

🤯 Wow fact: The oldest known school is 34 centuries old — Sumerian ‘tablet houses’ taught writing by copying clay tablets.

Good guesses kids make

“To give children somewhere to go while parents worked” — Childcare became a function much later — the first schools existed to produce readers and record-keepers for temples and kings.

“Because kids refused to learn at home” — Kids always learned at home — schools arose when the KNOWLEDGE outgrew the household.

“To invent homework” — Homework is a side effect nobody voted for — schools started for reading, reckoning, and religion.
