Why do we have eyebrows?
The short answer first, then the real reason — and a version for younger kids. Guess before you scroll to make it stick.
✅ To stop sweat and rain dripping into my eyes
But why?
Long ago, our ancestors ran and sweated a lot under the hot sun. Salty sweat stinging the eyes made everything blurry and ouchy. Bushy brows caught the sweat and channeled it down the side of the face. Later, humans also learned to move brows to show feelings — surprise, worry, anger — so they became face-talk too.
🧒 For younger kids: Brows catch sweat and rain and slide them away from your eyes!
🤯 Wow fact: Eyebrows also talk! Raising them shows surprise — they’re easy to read even from far away.
Good guesses kids make
“Just for decoration” — They do look great! But they have real jobs too.
“To keep my eyes warm” — Eyelids and eyelashes protect and shield eyes. Brows mostly block sweat.
“So we can recognize faces” — Ooh, deep — brows DO help us recognize people! But their first job was sweat-blocking.
